Action on Climate Change

While it is ridiculous that it needs to be said; climate change is real. The Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO advise that Australia’s average temperature has increased since 1910 and temperatures will increase in the future.

The evidence from these organisations suggests that climate change will lead to more catastrophic bushfires and extreme weather events.

Australia as a nation needs to commit to doing its part to reduce its carbon emissions and start implementing changes to become a more sustainable country.

The Labor Party has always been the party for environmental protection and real action on climate change.

Labor’s core principles that underpin our approach to climate change policy remain unshakeable. That is why an Albanese Labor Government will make Australia carbon neutral by 2050.

This is a goal that the CSIRO says will deliver higher wages and incomes, and lower power costs.

It is a goal that is the right thing to do by future generations which includes my son Leo, and is the right thing to do by our economic interests today.

Australia has the potential to become an energy superpower – but only if we have the strong and visionary leadership needed to bring Australia together to seize the opportunities in front of us.

Labor’s policies will be underpinned by commitments to ensure no workers or communities are left behind, as well as to protect future generations from dangerous climate change that would see even worse emergencies than the ones we have seen over this last summer.

In contrast, the Liberal and National parties have paid nothing more than lip service to real climate action, with carbon emissions in 2020 being projected to be the same as they were in 2013.

There is no place for new coal-fired power stations in Australia. There are cheaper, reliable and clean alternatives including solar, wind and battery technology.

Australia has already lost ten years to baseless fear campaigns against climate action. We can’t afford to lose another ten.

I encourage you to share your concerns with the Environment Minister, The Hon Sussan Ley MP and demand stronger action on climate change. She can be reached at: Minister.Ley@environment.gov.au.
